PCM Measurement

A PCM measurement (plagiocephalometry) is used to measure the severity of flattening. This measurement method allows us to determine the shape of the skull, not the circumference, in a simple and reliable way.

For both asymmetric flattening (plagiocephaly) and central flattening (brachycephaly), the measurement provides values that indicate the severity and future expectations. A measurement can be performed once to assess the flattening, or it can be repeated later in the treatment process to measure improvement.

When and how is the measurement done

The measurement is performed using a thermoplastic band, which hardens within a few minutes once placed around the skull. Several points (nose and ears) are marked, after which the band can be easily removed from the skull. This band is then copied, allowing the pediatric physical therapist to further measure and assess the flattening on paper. You can take the band home with you!

A PCM band is always made by a pediatric physical therapist who has experience with this method and can accurately calculate and assess the results. A PCM band is not routinely made for every case of positional preference, but depending on the degree of asymmetry, it can be an additional tool to better map the flattening or used in cases where observation alone does not provide a clear assessment.
